The last hour of the day should not be lit like an office.

Most evenings end under a ceiling light still running at full daylight, or beside a lamp that looks good from across the room and is the last thing you would actually touch. You dim what you can and the room still feels switched on.

This one sits low, beside the chair. Turn the dial down until the room is only glowing, put your feet on the dome, and the light is coming off something warm and round instead of down from the ceiling. At a desk it does the same for your hands.

Rest is the word. It is a 2.5 kg block of salt and not a step, so do not stand on it or put your weight through it.

Why this one and not a twenty dollar lamp

  • A single block, not a basket of chunksThe light passes through one continuous piece of rock. Baskets of loose chunks cost less to make and throw light through the gaps between the pieces.
  • Shaped to be touchedRounded all over and finished so there is no edge anywhere on it. That is a different job from a lamp built only to be looked at across a room.
  • The hardware is in the boxA cord with a rotary dimmer dial and a bulb, both included. You screw the bulb in yourself, which takes about a minute and no tools.
  • You see the actual stone firstLit and unlit, photographed by us. No renders, and no borrowed supplier art.

No corners, so no hot spots

Corners concentrate light and throw bright edges. A dome has none, so the brightness falls away gradually from the crown down to the base and the lamp reads as one soft mass rather than a lit object with hard lines on it.

It is cut from a single block, so the light crosses unbroken mineral instead of the gaps between loose chunks in a wire basket. That solid mass is also what holds the warmth once the bulb has been on a while, and what makes the whole surface an even temperature rather than hot in one spot.

The same glow from every side

This is the lamp lit and turning, our own footage of the piece. There is no bright edge and no dark patch anywhere on it. That is the whole point of a dome: light leaves a curved surface evenly, so it looks the same from any chair in the room.

Lit, turning on a stand.

Where it actually goes

  • Beside the reading chairFloor level, where your feet already are.
  • On a deskA warm surface for your hands while you work.
  • On the lowest settingTurned right down, it reads as a glow rather than a light.
  • As a giftOne solid carved piece on a turned wooden base, with the bulb and dimmer cord in the box.

The same lamp, off and on

On the left it is switched off in daylight. On the right it is the same lamp with the bulb lit. Raw salt is a muted pink; the colour only deepens once there is light behind it. Both of these are our own photographs of the product we ship.

Switched on

Every dome is cut from different rock, so the veining and the exact shade of yours will not match these photographs precisely. That is worth saying out loud, because it is the thing people are most often disappointed by when they buy salt online.

How big it actually is

About 12.5 cm tall and 15.7 cm across, which is 4.9 by 6.2 inches, on a 2 cm turned wooden base. It weighs 2.5 kg, about 5.5 lb. Salt is dense, so it is noticeably heavier in the hand than it looks in a photograph. This is a lamp for a floor beside a chair, a side table or a desk.

Why it costs what it costs

Domes shaped for resting hands and feet on are usually sold as wellness equipment, often well past a hundred dollars, carried along by claims about air and health. We make none of those claims. This is a lamp: a solid piece of salt, a warm bulb and a dial to set the level. What it does is glow, and hold a little warmth.

Looking after it

Salt draws moisture out of the air, so keep it somewhere dry and wipe it with a dry cloth, never under a tap. In a humid room it can bead or weep a little: leaving it switched on keeps it dry, and a coaster protects the surface underneath. Nobody tells you that when you buy one, and it is the most common surprise people have with salt.

Free shipping on every US order. Delivery is 12 to 15 days from the date you order, and every order is covered by the 30-day money-back guarantee.

Before you buy

Can I really put my feet on it?
Rest them on it, yes. That is what the rounded top is good for: sit down in a chair and put your feet up on the dome while it is lit, or keep it on a desk and rest your hands on it. Rest is the limit though. It is one solid 2.5 kg block of salt, not a step, so do not stand on it or put your weight through it.
How warm does it actually get?
Warm, the way any lit salt lamp is warm. The bulb sits inside the salt and the block holds that heat, so the surface is comfortably warm to touch rather than hot. Turn the dimmer down and it is cooler; turn it up and it is warmer.
How big is it really?
About 12.5 cm tall and 15.7 cm across, which is 4.9 by 6.2 inches, on a 2 cm wooden base. It weighs 2.5 kg, about 5.5 lb. Salt is dense, so most people find it heavier in the hand than they expected from the photographs.
Will mine look exactly like the photographs?
No, and no two look the same as each other either. Every dome is cut from a different block, so colour and veining vary from piece to piece. Unlit in daylight the stone is a muted pink; the deep amber only appears once the bulb is on.
Does it come with a bulb, and can I dim it?
Both are included. The cord has a round rotary dial on it that sets the brightness, and a bulb comes in the box. You screw the bulb in yourself, which takes about a minute and needs no tools.
Why do salt lamps sweat, and will this one?
Salt pulls moisture out of the air, so in a humid room the surface can bead or weep a little. Leaving it switched on keeps it dry, and a coaster or mat protects whatever it stands on. Keep it out of bathrooms and away from open windows in damp weather.
How long does delivery take?
12 to 15 days from the date you order, with free shipping on every US order. It is longer than a same-week delivery because these are cut and packed at source rather than held in a warehouse here.
What if I do not like it?
You have 30 days to send it back for your money. If it turns up damaged, tell us and we will sort it out.
